I stumbled upon this interesting blog post by Revinax, a virtual training company, about how we learn and why we remember VR experiences almost as if they were real life experiences.
First, it stimulates the senses in a way traditional 2D media doesn't because of the sense of presence. In addition, the active nature of a VR experience makes us more likely to remember because we remember our actions more than we remember things we only see or hear - so, the more interactivity, the better we will remember the experience but even just looking around a VR experience is more active than watching TV. They presented this image, "the cone of learning."

The blog went on to talk about the emotional component of VR and how that also helps us remember VR experiences more.
